In every country the law regulates which surgeries can be performed in the form of One-day Surgery and which demand longer than one-day hospitalization.
Any of the interventions’ consequences can be unpredictable complications, which can possibly extend the hospitalization period. But those surgeries, to which the legislator assigned longer hospital observation than one-day, usually accompany more often complications of serious nature. The demand for hospital observation which takes longer than 24 hours ensures the primary safety of the patient. The grouping of these surgeries differs from one country to another country and can vary according to the countries level of experience within a specific field.
Generally we can say that the rate and number of the surgeries, which can be performed within the confines of the one-day surgery, increase equally worldwide with the development of surgical and anaesthetic techniques and pharmacology.
In the case of specific group of patient and surgery types the intervention can only be performed in the form of more-day hospital attendance (longer than 24 hours).
More-day hospitalization is required in the following instances:
- In the case of the patient, who has been diagnosed with a significant disease, which makes the everyday life challenging besides the disease, which requires surgery (respiratory disease, cardiac disease, etc.).
- During the course of those interventions, where the patient needs long lasting infusion treatment, blood products, breathing assistance, considerable attendance, etc. Also due to the surgery type and the surgery accompanied consequences which encumbers significantly the everyday life.
- In the case of interventions, where common and serious side effects can occur, following surgery, and therefore hospital observation is required.
Should the patient feel good following surgery and does not to resort to the hospital observation and treatment facilities, even though it is medically recommended, the patient can depart the institute earlier than scheduled. In this instance, the patient has to declare that he has requested to leave the institute, despite medical recommendations and that he/she understands the risks involved.
We suggest the releasing of the patient under the following conditions:
- its circulation, breathing, blood pressure are in a continuous stable condition, unproblematic,
- it can consume sufficient liquid unproblematic,
- its laboratory parameters (blood picture, blood sugar, etc.) fall in average range,
- it is self-supporting and should little help be required it is available at her/his residence,
- the intake of medicine is unproblematic,
- the patient is fully awake, reacts to her/his conditions and is well orientated.
We are at all times at our patient’s disposal should any complications or concerns of possible side-effects occur!
